GST & PST TO BE CHARGED AT THE BOARDER FROM NOW ON

Posted in News on 21.07.09

Seems Canada Customs has decided they were losing money on these rescues and have now valued them at $300 each and are charging 5% GST and 8% PST on each dog.  These dogs were to be put down, no one wanted them and now they have ‘value’ to our gov’t.

It doesn’t matter that they only COST us money, that there is NO money made on them (after vetting in U.S. dollars – spay/neuter, shots, HW test, Lyme test, bortadella shot and then canadian $$ for deworming and de parasiting, HW prevention, kennel koff treatment, any illnesses that come up like our poor shroder who has an idiopathic pneumonia that has costed 3 weeks of antibiotics, xrays and tests to the tune of apprx $800 SO FAR and that is NOT including the money we paid to have him brought up here!

So what’re we going to do – same as everyone else I guess. The adoption donation goes up $50/dog to cover the cost. Yes we will argue everytime we go and try to avoid it but it’s at all th boarder crossings so we likely can’t do anything about it.

I was shocked when I read this. I will definitely be writing to my member of parliament about this and I think others who feel the same way should too, there is no reason why taxes should be charged – it’s not like it rescuing dogs is a profit making venture.

That is crazy. There is no money changing hands and no retailer, how can they charge GST? Are you sure this is a government thing and not an interpretation by the one border crossing? I am not finding much on the web about it and no government statement. Do you know of anyone else being charged at other border crossings?
