DNAMYDOG.COM

Posted in News on 30.09.09

may not be all they advertise.

They say two weeks but 3 clients didn’t get theirs for a month and one of them just sent me their results.  The dog is a newfie/great dane or some large lab mix breed and after waiting a month for results they were told the strongest DNA for the dogs is a Shitzu and number 2 strongest is a Jack Parsons Terrier AHAHAHAHAHA the dog is 8 mos old and over 70lbs already ;-) ))

Having had personal experience with Mindy, the owner I think, and knowing that she personally and from that prfessionally acts on inaccurate information, neither attempting to verify anything or having proof to make a decision on, it appears the company is also not veryifying they info they send out to people who pay hard earned dollars to them.

I’m very disappointed in this company. I expected better from them and apologise PROFUSELY for offering their kits to you.

We’ve Added a New PRODUCT

Posted in News on 02.09.09

Dr. Clark’s Healthy Hips is a suppliment we’ve been using on Hank (yrs, as a preventative), Molsyn (6 yr old mastiff with 2 bad knees), Rufus (9 yr old lab with atrophied back leg muscles) and a couple other older or slower rescues to see how it compares to our usual use of large doses of MSM and Vitamin C as well as Sasha’s blend and a few other supps.

Dr. C”s Healthy Hips has outstripped ALL the others. It’s biggest claim to fame for us is how quickly it works – they said 3-4 wks – we’ve found in as little a 2 weeks the dogs are walking better if they walked like old farts, running if they didn’t run b4 and jumping up too (all three in Molsyn’s case in 3 weeks).

In talking to the people who make Dr. C’s Healthy Hips we learned that anyone can say their product has glucosamine or anything else actually and as long as it’s in there they’re telling the truth. The problem is the dogs need a certain amount for it to work based on weight. Healthy Hips has the right amount, DOES WORK and we CARRY IT NOW!

Anyone who has an older dog or knows someone who does – PLEASE get them to try this product! It’s less expensive than Sasha’s blend too.

FOSTER PEOPLE NEEDED PLEASE

Posted in News on 16.08.09

We have some great rescue dogs who aren’t finding homes quickly for various reasons like they’re older (Rufus), ugly (Beautiful Belle), old and not in good physical shape (Molsyn) or old, ugly and not in good physical shape (Puggles).

Then there are the ones who are just a little weird or unpredicatble who need strong owners/fosters to work them and lead them (Sophie & Girly). Others a prefect dogs but here too long like Tru, Smitty and soon Lindy. They are attractive, sought after dogs ‘types’ but just haven’t been ‘found’ by the right people yet.

We could also use homes with kids of all ages for the younger dogs to interact with, be played with by kids.

Fostering is ideally no more than 3-6 weeks, we give you the food, take care of any medicals. We ask that you treat the dog as a member of your family, take them out for good walks in areas there are other dog lovers and tell everyone they are avaialble for adoption – expose them to people – give out our cards with the website link to people. Also, it seems like a good luck charm when dogs are fostered – for some reason i immediately get apps for them! So the last requirement is that you bring the dogs for appts to meet prospective adopters, talk to those people, let them know how fantastic the dog is and all the good, annoying, joyful AND BAD things about the dog. Remember, we want adoptions to stick so honesty is key.

We DO get people offering to foster certain dogs, the ‘cute’ ones especially. These dogs don’t need to be fostered. They’re rarelyt here long enuf to leave an impression. It’s the ‘hard to adopt’ ones who need you or someone you know to love them for a little while.

It’s also fun if you have a dog or two already for YOUR dogs to have a new playmate and trust me when i say each extra dog is extra cost but waay less hassle than one dog – with fostering we’re eliminating the cost too!

If you know someone who recently lost a dog or an older friend, relative, neighbour who might need a dog to keep them company, we have them.

Please send the link http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/ON258.html or this entire website link to anyone who might want to help

Thanks!

GREAT ELECTRICIAN WOULD LIKE EXTRA WORK PLEASE

Posted in News on 12.08.09

MY electrician, Lance Felix, is a self employed electrician mostly for bigger companies and corporations.
With two kids are in university and he is looking for extra work from ‘regular’ people and from people running companies who need to subcontract or hire contractors.
Lance has done all my electric, phones, wiring, re-wiring – you know the kind of stuff WE need to keep going here – and in the 5 years i’ve known him he has never screwed up, over charged, always completed a job and has super helpful with advice and suggestions to save money.
His rates are really reasonable but the best part is i never worry after he’s done something whether the place will catch fire or fuses will over load.
He’s fast, reliable, and i trust him completely.
If any of you need an electrician (he works all over the place) or need to hire one part time please call him on his biz phone 416-509-8693.
He’s bonded, certified all the good stuff and he is nice.
Like all contractors – heck men in general – they like to tell you in detail what they’ve done EXACTLY and they don’t notice your eyes glazing over so it’s faster and easier to just give them a round of applause for each task accompolished.
FOR GREAT ELECTRICAL CONTRACTING CALL LANCE 416-509-8693

REALLY GROSS STORY but we’ve all been there in some way ;-)

Posted in News on 11.08.09

This story is from Heidi who adoptded Janie from another rescue but she was boarding with us. Janie is a collie/chow/lab all black and absolutely gorgeous!
from Heidi:
Well David let Janey out at 4:30am when he got up and I guess she carried in a squirrel and deposited it beside my bed.  Somehow I missed it when I got up in the morning.  On my way past my room a few minutes later I see her squeeky squirrel (or so I thought) on the floor.  Now it is 6:30 and I am tired so I’m looking and am about 12 inches away, bent over thinking “that looks bigger than I thought it ……AHHHHHHHHHHHHH”
I take the kids downstairs and find a piece of the tail at the bottom of the stairs.  So we got dressed and skooted out for 4 hours but at some point I had to return.  And when I did it was laying in the front hallway missing a leg.  And there was blood on the floor, to which my 3 year old said “Now Janey put jam on the floor!”
So I put her outside and covered the squirrel with a garbage bag and called David telling him he needed to come home NOW.  So he left work and drove back.  In the mean time I shooed Janey upstairs and closed the baby gate.
When Dave got home he couldn’t find the squirrel and I was far too grossed out to help him search.
Turns out she somehow got it from the front hallway on her way up the stairs without me noticing and took it up to have a snack…. on my bed.
Needless to say David now has to ensure that there is no squirrel in Janey’s mouth in the morning before she comes in.
Cheeky dog!!

GST & PST TO BE CHARGED AT THE BOARDER FROM NOW ON

Posted in News on 21.07.09

Seems Canada Customs has decided they were losing money on these rescues and have now valued them at $300 each and are charging 5% GST and 8% PST on each dog.  These dogs were to be put down, no one wanted them and now they have ‘value’ to our gov’t.

It doesn’t matter that they only COST us money, that there is NO money made on them (after vetting in U.S. dollars – spay/neuter, shots, HW test, Lyme test, bortadella shot and then canadian $$ for deworming and de parasiting, HW prevention, kennel koff treatment, any illnesses that come up like our poor shroder who has an idiopathic pneumonia that has costed 3 weeks of antibiotics, xrays and tests to the tune of apprx $800 SO FAR and that is NOT including the money we paid to have him brought up here!

So what’re we going to do – same as everyone else I guess. The adoption donation goes up $50/dog to cover the cost. Yes we will argue everytime we go and try to avoid it but it’s at all th boarder crossings so we likely can’t do anything about it.

18 ARRIVED on Fri and 18 is TOO MANY AT ONCE!!

Posted in News on 27.06.09

It’s pretty crazy here with 18 dogs (oh, and two more arriving on sunday…) all in various stages of having been neutered or  spayed – who get to be out with whom, who needs to cool their jets more than they’d like… 18 dogs who don’t know their names since we just invented them (they did learn ‘Cookie’ pretty quick tho), are very fearful or traumatised, submissive pissers til you just want to SCREAM.

All of them exceptionally loving tho in spite of it all and coming to check you out or give a kiss even tho you’d rather be lying on the couch in an airconditioned livingroom – the same one inviting you from upstairs.

People of course coming & going to see dogs, pick up food, have to see the newbies or Satan #1 & Satan # 2 – aka Rollie & Pollie – who are facinated by the chaos and peeved not to be too included since they can see for themselves that there are a LOT of short dogs just like THEM to play with.

Sandra and John came and gave baths and picked off Ticks and brushed and brushed and brushed – unbeliveable the hair – birds are LOVING IT!! Sandra took pictures too so new ones shld be up tmo or mon or tues once sorted thru.

No other volunteers on the horizon for the next few days tho.

On the bright side – PENNY AND RUBY TUESDAY WERE ADOPTED TODAY AND OZZY MAY GO ON TUES!!

We’re trying to figure out how to add Bob & Madeline’s pictures of the transport to this post – may take a couple days.

Blind Ray

Posted in News on 23.06.09

Well we got Ray neutered yesterday and he sailed thru the surgery and is pretty much back to normal.

We have an appt on july 10th with an opthamologist to look at his cataracts and help us decide about surgery.

We are now seriously fundraising (no we don’t know how to go about it) and are hoping for some help.

We obviously have space for a good party with vendors too.

The appt with the opthamologist will cost in the $300 range and that’s just to decide if it’s worth it to do the testing to find out if it’s worth it to do the cataract surgery. Testing i think is in the $500 range and actual surgery is in the $3500 range.

I have a call into that vet (East Oshawa Clinic where she works out of on alternate fridays – pls DON’T start calling there. We haven’t even met them yet) – to find out exact costs and will keep you posted.

If you’d like to help us make a fundraising party or donate either thru Paypal on the site http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/ON258.html (they do take a fee for this service) or calling us with a visa or M/C  OR once we know what the costs will be by committing to the vet clinic an amt towards the bill. Pug Angels (link is at bottom of page) is thinking of sponsoring him too.

If the surgery is more cost than value (he does really well as is but he has 4-5 good years left and shouldn’t have to be handicapped for them) we won’t do it.

Any funds collected would go to future ‘hard to adopt out dogs’ with problems due to age or imfirmity.

Personal Experiences, Discussion Groups, Comments

Posted in News on 19.06.09

We have a story coming on CVD (Surviving Canine Vestibular Disease - A journal of recovery) by one of our readers, Artemio,  probably tmo.

We’ve also been asked to start a discussion group on food  and also one for adoptors of our dogs to compare notes, trade stroies, ideas, training tips. Lucy’s M0m has offered to moderate that one so we’ll figure out how to do it.

If people have other ideas or comments, lets see what we can do here.

We’re gonna do the Facebook thing soon too.

We’re Working on CHARITY STATUS

Posted in News on 10.06.09

We’re getting charity status and shld have it soon we hope. it’ll give us the opportunity to give tax recpts to people who make donations to us and WE NEED DONATIONS!!

You’d be helping to save apprx 10-15 dogs PER WEEK – dogs like Ray who is 9 yrs old, blind and while he has 4-5 good years left is NOT likely to be adopted so we keep him til he is and that is food, HW meds in season, anything he needs… that costs money.

YES, some of you are thinking ‘she picks the dogs, wants to do this rescue, it’s HER responsibilty” and you’re 100% correct! i realize this and while i do ask for donations, i don’t expect everyone to help.  IT IS MY CHOICE TO DO THIS.

Sometimes too many of you want to help but think that $10,20 or 30 dollars isn’t enuf.  I used to be c ollector in my last life and i had to collect Eatons accounts from welfare mothers – I asked each to send $5 in on their accounts and i got $2000 in ONE DAY so seriously, no amt is too small.

Soon we’ll even be able to issue tax receipts!!
